According to the National ICT Workforce Survey 2010 , current annual demand for new jobs in Information technology is about 10,000. This Degree programme is started to increase the professionals in Information technology in Sri Lanka. Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) is external degree based on information technology which conducted by the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC). Those who successfully completed this degree programme go so many jobs under Information Technology and Computer Science field in Sri Lanka and aboard. University of moratuwa also conducted separate Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) degree under their university also. UCSC BIT degrees is much famous and they conducted their course successfully since 2000.
The main advantage of following this UCSC BIT degree is the fee for this course is low by compared with other private degrees related this Information technology stream. after completion of first or second year student got the chance to obtain diploma or higher diploma and got more employ opportunities. Student can also follow this degree programme in part time while doing a job.
BIT Entry Qualifications:
Applicant need to pass three subjects for G.C.E Advanced Level Examinations in any stream or any other educational qualifications acceptable to the faculty broad and approved by the Senate of University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC).
and
A credit pass for Mathematics in the G.C.E (O/L) examination.
The study programm is consist of two semester and there are assessment through the LMS and separate semester exams for complete this degree.
BIT Medium of Study
Examinations and Assessments of this BIT External Degree programme is conducted in English Medium.
BIT Course Structure
First Year consist of eight subjects and need to get 30 credits to complete the year. Each semester consist 4 modules of study programme Second year also consist eight subjects and need to Select all 4 Compulsory courses and 4 out of 6 Optional courses. Third year got 6 subjects to follow and Select all 3 Compulsory courses and 3 out of 5 Optional courses of BIT programme.Basically BIT Degree is classified in to three major course and those are

Higher Diploma in Information Technology (HDIT)
Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT)
A Diploma in Information Technology (DIT) will be awarded on after successful completion of course examinations of the first year. Higher Diploma in Information Technology (HDIT) will be awarded to holders of the IT Diploma on successful completion of course examinations of the second year and after successfully completion of 1, year 2 and year 3 examinations and fulfillment of other requirements the student may award Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT).
