Sri Lanka Foreign Service is a distinct service governed by the government of Sri Lanka and this service was established in 1948. Sri Lanka Foreign Service was later known as Sri Lanka Overseas Service (SLOS) and this is the body of Diplomats of Sri Lanka. Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the head of this service. Sri Lanka Overseas Service has three grades, such as:
- Grade I officers
- Grade II officers
- Grade III officers
Those who completed recognized degree in Sri Lanka are eligible to face the open competitive examination for Sri Lanka Foreign Service and the grade which recruited for this service are grade III. Those who are willing to join this prestigious service need to face a written exam and interview. The total mark received by Written examination plus interview take in to consider to recruited for this position. This is another highly competitive examination in Sri Lanka and for this position examinations were held on once a few years. Those who successfully selected for Sri Lankan Foreign Service will follow a training program under several institutes such as Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute and the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration. Based on their duty station they may hold one of the following areas
- At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- At a Diplomatic mission
- At a consulate
Entrance Qualification for Sri Lanka Foreign Service
- Applicant must obtain a degree from recognized university in Sri Lanka.

- Those who followed foreign degree must have approved by University Grant Commission of Sri Lanka and applicant need show the written evidence of this approval while facing the interview.
- Applicant must be a Sri Lankan citizen.
- Applicant must have a good character.
- Those who select for this position must have a physical and mental strength to work in any place in Sri Lanka or Aboard.
Age Duration
Applicant must between age of 22 to 32 but those who work as public servant bellow 40 years of age can also apply for this position.

Sri Lanka Foreign Service Open Competitive Written Exam & Interview
The exam will have held on normally Sinhalese, Tamil and English Medium and applicant have the ability to chose the one medium of above languages. There are 6 exams which included 100 marks for each exams and following are the papers which come for this exam.

- Summary Writing
- General Knowledge and IQ
Those who qualified to face interview must obtain at least 300 marks for the all six examinations and at least 40% of each question paper. The total mark for Interview is 100.
