The goal of the Higher National Diploma Program in Engineering (HNDE) is to turn high school graduates who are good at math into middle-level engineers who are good at engineering. So, the goal of the program is to make sure that students have a clear knowledge of engineering principles, how they can be used in the real world, and the growing need for changes and creative innovations in the field.
Higher National Diploma in Engineering (HNDE) program introduced in to Sri Lanka in the year of 1986 to produce quality incorporate engineers for Sri Lanka as well as international engineering industry. This Diploma programme in governed by Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education Institute which was under the ministry of higher education. HNDE course is parallel to the National Diploma in Technology (NDT) and this course is also affiliated to B-TEC England and this provides a great international recognition to this course.
Entry Education Qualifications:
Applicants should have obtained passes in any three (03) of the following subjects:
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Combined Mathematics
- Advanced Mathematics at one and the same sitting of a C.E. (A.L.) Examination
The student must bellow the age of 24 if he or she wishes to apply for HNDE programme.
Selection procedure:
The selection of the students to follow the Higher National Diploma in Engineering (HNDE) progremmes will mainly based on the Z- Score under the Advanced Level Examination. The short listed student has to face an interview for selection. Since the demand for this course is very high there are good completions for select for this Engineering Diploma programme.
Course Duration:
Duration of this course is 3 years and 6 months in full time with relevant industrial visits, Labs, workshops ect. The main area of your studies decides while you follow the course. For example the area of student follows mainly categorized as bellow.

If you have a chance to follow this diploma programmes you are not eligible to apply for do studies at any Diploma or Degree level full time course at any government universities or technical institute.
Labs and Workshops
Higher National Diploma in Engineering programme is associate with a greater practical’s and there are so many high quality newly established Labs and workshops available at this institute.
